Botched Operation Has Long Term Effects
St. Michaels HospitalToronto, Ontario
In February 2004 our son had an operation at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. The planned operation was to remove his gallbladder laprascopically which is normally day surgery but our son was suffering from sleep apnea so they wanted to keep him in the hospital overnight.

Because of complications, due to a failed clamp things got real serious and he ended up in intensive care for ~ 3 months where he was placed in an induced coma. Because of the failed clamp they had to open him up and the incision never healed properly and he now has a giant hernia approximately 12” in diameter. One time while in intensive care, due to a bad reaction to a drug they had given him, we were told that there was a real possible that they would have to amputate both of his legs. Fortunately, he has not lost his legs but has lost the sense of feeling in his left foot and has developed an ulcer on his foot which refuses to heal. As a result, he may eventually lose this foot. The fact that our son is overweight does not help the situation.

Throughout the entire ordeal which lasted a total of 4 months we never received any admittance of incompetence or any kind of an apology from the hospital or any of their staff.

Just keep in mind that even the big hospitals screw up but they are never going to admit it.
