| I started a new job last week and my employer will only pay by direct bank deposit so I went into the closest bank to where I work the Scotia Bank at Queen & Church in Toronto to open an account.
I went to the Information desk there was no one else waiting for service there and said I wanted to open a chequing account. The woman at the information desk said that I would have to line up for that. I asked "Can any Teller open it" And she responded "You have to line up" I asked again "Can any Teller do it" And she repeated "You have to stand in line Sir" So I stood in line I think it was welfare day because I timed it and I was in line 12 minutes 14 seconds. When I got to a teller and said that I wanted to open a chequing account he told me I would have to book an appointment would the next day at 2pm be okay? I was annoyed that I stood in line that long just to make an appointment if the woman at the information desk had told me I was only lining up to make an appointment I would have come back later or the next day when they were not that busy. However not wanting to cause trouble I said tomorrow at 2pm would be okay. He then asked the logical questions my name and telephone number and asked to see some identification. I got out my driving licence and he asked if I had anything else. I then got out my social insurance card , my health card and my employment ID. He told me I would need something to confirm my address that they did not consider a driving licence sufficient. I asked if a passport would be okay and he said no because addresses in passports can be changed by hand. He suggested a recent utility bill. I told him I don't get utility bills my utilities are included in my rent and the telephone is under my girlfriends name. He asked if my name was on the lease and I confirmed it was so he said the lease combined with the driving licence would be sufficient. On the way home after work I noticed that a branch of TD-Canada Trust was open. So I took a chance and popped in. 20 minutes later I had an account. My driving licence , social insurance card and employment ID were all they required and they didn't make me stand in line just to book an appointment. | ||
